In a recent conversation on The Music Podcast, renowned singer Arijit Singh shared insights into the evolution of auto-tune in the Indian music industry. Singh acknowledged AR Rahman as the pioneer who introduced the concept to India, transforming the way singers sounded. However, he noted that times have changed, highlighting that Rahman himself no longer relies on auto-tune.
Singh emphasized the misconception surrounding auto-tune, clarifying that it cannot turn a non-singer into a singer. He credited Rahman for subtly incorporating auto-tune, making singers sound more melodious. According to Singh, emotional singing often leads to imperfections in pitch, but he praised Sonu Nigam's exceptional ability to stay perfectly in tune.
The singer also revealed that some music composers, including Mithoon Sharma and Vishal Bhardwaj, dislike auto-tune. While Rahman used to employ it in the past, he now prefers the natural voice without enhancements. Singh acknowledged Pritam's consistent use of auto-tune in his music to enhance its overall sound quality.
Arijit Singh, celebrated for hits like "Tum Hi Ho" and "Chahun Main Ya Naa," reflected on his journey in Bollywood since his debut in Murder 2 with "Phir Mohabbat." Known for emotive singing, he expressed his views on the nuanced relationship between technology and musical expression. Singh's latest song, "Lutt Putt Gaya" from the film Dunki, directed by Rajkumar Hirani, is set to release on December 21.
