Spotify has introduced music videos, allowing users to watch their favorite artists perform while listening to playlists. Currently in beta, this feature is accessible only to users in select countries, including the UK, Germany, Italy, and Brazil, with a limited catalogue available.
Sten Garmark, Spotify's global head of consumer experience, explained to TechCrunch that the choice of these markets was based on factors such as content availability and market size. This hints at a future expansion to include more regions.
Initially, the music video catalogue will feature songs from artists like Ed Sheeran, Doja Cat, Ice Spice, Aluna, and Asake, with thousands more expected to be added over time. However, access to music videos requires a Premium subscription.
If you meet the criteria and reside in one of the eligible countries, you can find the "Switch to Video" icon on the Now Playing screen of supported tracks in the Spotify app. Tapping this icon restarts the song and begins playing the music video in fullscreen mode, similar to YouTube's functionality.
Music videos can be enjoyed on Spotify's iOS, Android, desktop, and TV apps. While Spotify already offers various video content like podcasts and "Clips," this addition brings it closer to competitors like Tidal, Apple Music, and YouTube Music, which have long provided music videos.
Despite these advancements, Spotify's promised feature, Spotify HiFi, which would offer high-fidelity audio, remains elusive. This is a feature already available on platforms like Tidal and Apple Music, leaving Spotify users awaiting its arrival.
