Hungama Music To Shut Down Streaming Service On April 15

India’s homegrown digital streaming platform Hungama Music will officially cease its music streaming operations on Tuesday, April 15. In a notification sent to users and obtained by Music Ally, the company confirmed that all downloaded music and personal libraries would no longer be accessible after the shutdown.

The move marks the third major exit from India’s increasingly crowded music streaming space in just over a year, following ByteDance’s Resso, which pulled the plug in January, and Wynk Music, which shut down in August 2024 after parent company Bharti Airtel partnered with Apple Music, migrating its users to the global platform.

Founded in 2013, Hungama Music was an early pioneer in India’s streaming boom. It made headlines in 2020 as the first Indian platform to strike a licensing deal with the Indian Performing Rights Society (IPRS). In a bold move, Hungama transitioned to a subscription-only model in 2023, joining rivals like Gaana, which dropped its freemium tier in 2022.

The closure comes just five months after its parent company, Hungama Digital Media—now rebranded as Hungama OTT—announced a strategic partnership with Virgin Music Group, Universal Music Group’s global indie label services division. The partnership aimed to amplify Indian regional music on the global stage.

Despite the shutdown of its music streaming service, Hungama OTT will continue to operate, offering movies, web series, podcasts, and audio content. Meanwhile, Hungama Artist Aloud, the company’s indie artist distribution and talent management platform, has also been recently relaunched—suggesting a strategic pivot from streaming to broader music services and content offerings.
