Spotify has taken its AI-powered DJ experience to the next level by introducing voice command support, allowing users to interact with their playlists in a more natural and personalized way. Originally launched in 2023, the AI DJ was designed to curate playlists based on a user’s listening habits. The latest update adds a conversational element, letting users directly influence what they hear by simply speaking to the DJ.
Available in over 60 countries—though not yet in India—the feature is currently exclusive to Spotify Premium subscribers. With the new update, users can make specific voice requests tailored to their mood, activity, or musical preference. Commands like “play some electronic beats for my morning workout” or “suggest romantic songs for a rainy day” are now supported, offering a hands-free way to shape the music experience.
Spotify says the AI DJ can also handle more nuanced prompts, such as “play rock bands I haven’t heard before” or “give me indie tracks for relaxing at night.” This functionality is aimed at reducing the need to scroll through menus or type in search filters, making playlist creation more seamless and intuitive.
Behind the scenes, the AI DJ blends artificial intelligence with human curation. It analyses users’ listening history, recognizes trends, and pulls in a mix of new releases and older favorites. The DJ's voice is modeled after Xavier “X” Jernigan, Spotify’s Head of Cultural Partnerships, lending a warm, conversational tone that enhances the experience.
While the feature is still in beta and currently doesn’t support podcasts or audiobooks, Spotify has noted positive feedback on the natural voice interaction and is working on further improvements. As AI continues to reshape digital music experiences, this update brings Spotify a step closer to making music discovery more interactive and personal than ever before.
