A.R. Rahman Launches AI Music Metaverse Secret Mountain With OpenAI CEO Sam Altman

Oscar-winning composer A.R. Rahman has announced a groundbreaking collaboration with OpenAI CEO Sam Altman for his upcoming AI-based project titled Secret Mountain. Rahman revealed the news on social media, sharing a photo with Altman and highlighting their discussion on harnessing artificial intelligence to empower Indian creators and solve long-term challenges.

Described as a virtual global band, Secret Mountain is being developed as a metaverse-driven musical platform. In his post, Rahman said the initiative aims to uplift Indian minds and use AI tools to tackle generational issues through creativity and collaboration.

Originally teased in February 2024, Secret Mountain was introduced via an animated video featuring “Luna,” a fictional character exploring a virtual world of cross-cultural musical identities. The project is positioned at the intersection of music, storytelling, and immersive technology, aiming to foster cultural connections.

While Rahman has expressed enthusiasm for AI’s creative potential, he maintains that the emotional depth of human composers is irreplaceable. “AI can be a starting point, but the human element remains irreplaceable,” he previously stated.

Secret Mountain will bring together artists and mentors from countries including India, China, Ireland, and parts of Africa, promoting global music collaboration through technology.

Meanwhile, Rahman is also working on the score for the highly anticipated film Ramayana, directed by Nitesh Tiwari, in collaboration with legendary composer Hans Zimmer. A launch date for Secret Mountain has not yet been announced.
