Music streaming platform Spotify has partnered with Universal Music Group to introduce AI-powered song covers and remix creation tools for subscribers, marking the first time Spotify will enable users to generate AI music content directly on its platform.
The companies announced the collaboration on Thursday but did not reveal financial details or specify which artists would be part of the initiative. Universal Music Group represents global stars including Taylor Swift, Ariana Grande, Drake and Billie Eilish.
The move signals Spotify’s deeper push into the fast-growing AI music space, placing it in more direct competition with AI music startups such as Udio and Suno, both of which offer tools for creating songs using artificial intelligence.
According to the companies, the new feature is designed to create an additional revenue stream for artists and songwriters alongside existing royalty earnings generated through Spotify streams.
“What we’re building is grounded in consent, credit and compensation for the artists and songwriters that take part,” Spotify co-CEO Alex Norström said in a statement.
The partnership comes as major record labels continue exploring licensing frameworks aimed at protecting their catalogues amid the rapid rise of AI-generated music, which has increasingly blurred the line between human-made and AI-created tracks.
Last year, Udio signed agreements with Universal Music Group and Warner Music Group to resolve copyright disputes, while Suno also reached a settlement with Warner Music Group. However, both AI music startups continue to face class-action lawsuits filed by more than 1,800 independent artists, who allege the companies’ actions harmed vulnerable members of the music community.
Spotify has already been expanding its AI-driven offerings to improve user engagement, including voice-enabled interactions for its AI DJ feature and playlist generation tools powered by natural-language prompts.
