EXCLUSIVE: In this pandemic technology is providing a great platform to artists: Yo Yo Honey Singh
Every year, June 21 is observed as World Music Day. This day serves as a reminder about the important role that music plays in our day to day life. To highlight this fact, Loudest.in hosted the Music Inc 3.0 Virtual Summit on 20th and 21st June, 2020. The two day virtual summit saw coming together of over 75 plus speakers. One of the top speakers at the virtual summit this year was the popular Indian composer, rapper, pop singer and film actor-- Yo Yo Honey Singh. In a freewheeling chat with Dr. Annurag Batra, Chairman and Editor-in-Chief, BW Businessworld and exchange4media, the popular music star spoke about nepotism, his journey in bollywood and about his life learnings.   Excerpts By Sohani Mittal   How did you get to be known as ‘Yo Yo Honey Singh’? Well, it’s a long story, about 11- 12 years old. Earlier my base was in Chandigarh. I was only a music director then and I only wanted to do music direction and produce music. I never wanted to write songs or sing them.  After 7- 8 years into music direction, I thought of writing a song as a solo artist, the song was, ‘Brown Rang’, and it became an instant hit and encouraged me to make more music. ‘Yo Yo’ means ‘aapka apna’ and later my name became Yo Yo Honey Singh.   What does money mean to Yo Yo Honey Singh? How important money is for an artist? It is important. Whether it’s a small artist or a big artist, their lifestyle is their way of living, and the way an artist’s lifestyle and routine works, they don’t believe in doing 9 to 5 jobs. So, to live the artist life in a real sense, money plays a  big role. When you have enough money the heart works, the brain works and music is made.    During the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, many people are facing unprecedented stress, as someone who has overcome a number of challenges in life, what do you want to tell them? Around 3- 4 years ago, there was news that I went to a rehab for treatment, but the fact is that I was at my home for around 2- 2.5 years. To all the people who are stressed about the pandemic, I want to tell them that I have survived 2- 2.5 years and never lost my hope and strength. And this is just a matter of months and every human would win in this fight against this pandemic.   How is technology helping artists in this hour of crisis? Technology is providing a great platform to artists and helping them create songs and promote them simultaneously. Technology also gives them instant feedback, whether the audience is loving their songs or not, they come to know fast. So, I think technology is supporting talent whether it’s musical or humorous content.    It’s said that you have a good grip over the pulse of youth and that is why your songs become instant hits, what do you attribute this trait to? I tend to hangout with youth in order to understand  their thinking process, their preferred slangs etc before writing or directing songs. The artists that I generally work with are mostly in the age group of 22 to 23 years. Working closely with them helps me to understand the finer nuances of their thinking process which I then try to incorporate in my songs to make them more relatable.   What are your three biggest life learnings? For me, the three biggest learnings are: Only listen to what your heart tells you because it knows what you desire and whether you can achieve it or not. Second is to stay close to your parents, look after them and support them, and finally, never lie to yourself.
