On the birth anniversary of legendary music composer and singer Bappi Lahiri, his son, Bappa Lahiri, opened up in an exclusive interview, reflecting on his father’s unparalleled legacy, vibrant personality, and enduring influence on music and culture.
Bappi Lahiri, fondly remembered as Bappida, would have turned 72 this year. To commemorate the occasion, Bappa has created a heartfelt tribute by re-recording “Chanda Dekhe Chanda” from the film Jhoothi. This reimagined version, featuring American singer Anuradha Juju and recorded with Bappida’s original musicians at Yash Raj Studios, aims to honor the original composition's spirit. The song's teaser premiered today at noon, with the full release set for later in the day under T-Series.
“It’s not a remix or recreation,” Bappa clarified. “It’s pure love, an ode to the legends—dad and Lataji—who gave us such great music.”
Reflecting on his father’s versatility, Bappa highlighted Bappida’s extensive contributions across genres, from classical compositions with Lata Mangeshkar and Kishore Kumar to pioneering disco hits and even early rap influences. He described Bappida as a visionary who was far ahead of his time, not only in music but also in fashion, inspiring contemporary trends.
“Everyone criticized his style back in the day, but now gold chains, embroidered jackets, and dark glasses are mainstream. He was the real OG of fashion,” Bappa said.
Bappa also recalled personal memories, including Bappida’s larger-than-life airport appearances and his warmth toward fans. Despite his stardom, Bappida was known for his humility, kindness, and willingness to help others.
When asked about recognition, Bappa expressed regret that his father, like many Indian musical legends, did not receive enough national honors. “He took Indian music to global heights, yet missed the awards he deserved. But his true reward was the love of his fans,” Bappa shared.
Even two years after his passing, Bappi Lahiri’s music continues to resonate globally, from India to ice cream parlors in Los Angeles. “Not a day goes by without thinking of him. His music, his blessings, they’re all around us,” Bappa said, his voice filled with pride and emotion.
Bappa’s tribute serves as a reminder of the timelessness of Bappi Lahiri’s work and the profound impact he had on music and culture worldwide.
