Spotify has finally delivered on a promise it first made in 2021,lossless audio streaming. After years of delays, the platform has begun rolling out its highest audio quality yet, allowing Premium subscribers to enjoy music in uncompressed formats as artists intended.
The feature, previously dubbed Spotify HiFi, brings playback in up to 24-bit/44.1 kHz FLAC and covers both new and older releases. Alongside, Spotify is introducing customizable quality settings across Wi-Fi, mobile data, and downloads, letting users switch between Low, Normal, High, Very High, and Lossless. Each setting also comes with an estimate of data usage.
Lossless support is already live on mobile, desktop, and tablets, as well as Spotify Connect-enabled devices from brands like Sony, Bose, Sennheiser, and Samsung. Compatibility for Sonos and Amazon devices will follow next month.
Enabling the feature requires a quick manual setup. Users need to go to Settings & Privacy > Media Quality in the Spotify app and activate Lossless individually for Wi-Fi, mobile, and downloads on each device.
The rollout is happening in phases. Premium users in the US, UK, Germany, Japan, Sweden, Australia, and several other countries can already access Lossless. Spotify says the update will expand to 50+ markets by October, but Indian listeners will have to wait a few more weeks before getting their hands on the upgrade.
