Universal Music Group (UMG), the world’s leading music-based entertainment company, has named James Steven as its new Executive Vice President & Chief Communications Officer, the company announced on February 4, 2026. Steven assumed the role on January 26 and is based in New York, reporting to UMG’s Chief Administrative Officer, Will Tanous.
In his expanded role, Steven will lead UMG’s internal and external communications efforts and oversee communication strategies across the company’s global operating units. His appointment underscores UMG’s focus on strengthening corporate storytelling and strategic messaging as it navigates a rapidly evolving music business landscape.
“We welcome James to UMG and look forward to his contributions,” said Sir Lucian Grainge, Chairman and CEO of Universal Music Group. “Given Will’s broadened role, it was important that we brought in a communications executive with experience and perspective , one who can step right in to help us continue to shape the future of music.”
Tanous added that Steven’s “extraordinary skill and dedication” in strategic communications and storytelling, along with his “love of music and broad experience across media and technology,” made him an ideal fit for the position as UMG pursues its next phase of growth.
Steven joins UMG after a decade at Warner Music Group, where he served as Chief Communications Officer. During his tenure at WMG, he played a key role in guiding the company through major corporate milestones, including its 2020 IPO and a leadership transition in 2022. He is also a board member of the Recording Industry Association of America.
Before his time at Warner Music Group, Steven held senior roles at several public relations firms, where he handled communications for clients across industries such as technology, entertainment, automotive and consumer goods. His career in music communications began in London in 2007, and he later moved to New York in 2012, rising to Senior Vice President, Communications & Marketing before taking on his chief communications responsibilities in 2015.
Steven’s appointment comes as part of a wider set of strategic leadership changes at UMG, following recent executive movements, including the addition of other senior roles across data and digital innovation functions.
