Indian hip-hop has received a major boost with the launch of Legacy, a new reality series created by Raftaar, KR$NA and Ankit Khanna under the Kalamkaar banner. Premiering on July 10 at 7:30 PM IST on the Kalamkaar Music YouTube channel, the show is designed to discover, mentor and celebrate the country's next generation of rap artists.
Positioned as more than a talent competition, Legacy brings together aspiring rappers from across India, placing the spotlight on lyrical ability, storytelling, originality and artistic growth through a series of rap battles, creative challenges and mentorship sessions.
Created by Raftaar, KR$NA and Kalamkaar Co-founder Ankit Khanna, the series aims to provide emerging artists with a platform that prioritises authenticity and craft over popularity. By focusing on discipline, resilience and storytelling, Legacy offers participants an opportunity to develop their skills while giving audiences an inside look at the journey of becoming a professional artist.
Speaking about the vision behind the platform, Ankit Khanna, Co-founder of Kalamkaar, said, "Kalamkaar has always stood for building artists, not just creating hits. Legacy reflects everything we've believed in from day one, investing in talent, nurturing originality and creating opportunities that have a lasting impact. We hope this becomes a platform that artists aspire to be part of while contributing to the continued growth of India's independent music ecosystem."
KR$NA said the initiative addresses a long-standing gap in the Indian hip-hop scene. "India has never lacked talent; it has lacked platforms that truly understand hip-hop. Legacy is about finding artists who respect the craft and are ready to push themselves. If this show inspires even a handful of artists to believe in their voice, we've achieved what we set out to do."
Echoing the sentiment, Raftaar added, "Hip-hop has always been about giving a voice to people who have something real to say. With Legacy, we're creating a platform where talent isn't judged by numbers or popularity, but by skill, hunger and originality. We want people to witness the journey of becoming an artist, because that's where the real story lies."
Saksham Mohta, Executive Director, SVF Entertainment, said the project reflects the growing importance of music-led storytelling. "Hip-hop is one of the fastest-growing spaces in Indian culture right now, and backing a platform that's built to find and grow real artists, not just a season's worth of content—is where we see this industry heading."
Each episode of Legacy combines high-stakes performances, creative challenges and candid conversations, highlighting not just rap skills but also the perseverance and mindset required to build a sustainable career in music.
Having premiered on July 10, Legacy marks a significant step for India's independent hip-hop ecosystem, offering emerging rappers a dedicated platform to showcase their talent while helping shape the future of the country's rapidly evolving rap culture.
