PRS For Music Survey: Creators Concerned Over AI’s Impact On Music

A new survey by PRS for Music has revealed growing unease among music creators about the rising influence of artificial intelligence (AI) in music creation and distribution, underscoring key tensions between innovation and artistic livelihood.

Based on responses from more than 2,630 PRS members, the results show that nearly four in five creators (79%) are worried about AI-generated music competing with human-made works,up 5 percentage points from a similar survey in 2023. A substantial 76% also believe AI could harm creators’ ability to earn a living, reflecting deep concerns about the broader economic implications of the technology.

Despite these worries, understanding of AI among music creators has improved. Over 70% of respondents said they now have a better grasp of how AI tools function in music production and creation, a significant jump from last year.

There is strong support among members for steps to ensure a fairer AI ecosystem. 93% of those surveyed feel creators should be compensated when their music is used in AI-generated content, and a similar majority want greater transparency in how AI tools generate music. Most respondents also want the right to decide whether their works can be used to train AI systems.

PRS for Music, which represents songwriters, composers and publishers, has been actively engaging with these issues. Its leadership has underlined the need for clear policies that protect human creativity and ensure that technological advances do not undermine the economic foundations of music creation.

The survey’s findings come amid wider industry debates over AI and copyright, with similar concern echoed in other studies showing creators’ fears that AI could threaten their careers and revenues if left unregulated.

Overall, the PRS survey highlights a critical moment in the music industry’s response to AI,one where balancing innovation with creator rights and fair compensation remains a priority for the community.
