Oscar-winning composer A.R. Rahman is set to chronicle his life, music and creative evolution in a new memoir titled Rahman: A Renaissance, which he will co-author with writer Rupa Chakravarty.
Rahman announced the book on social media, describing it as a closer look at the music, ideas, challenges, influences and experiences that have shaped his world. The memoir will explore different phases of his journey, from his early years and artistic evolution to the personal experiences and philosophies that continue to influence his work.
“My music comes from the constant evolution of my mind. The challenges, aspirations, dilemmas and tests I go through, the brotherhood I experience, the psychological turmoil, and faith, they are all interconnected. In some way, all of them become a part of the music I make,” Rahman said.
He added, “Through this book, I hope to share some of the moments, influences and ideas that have shaped that journey.”
The memoir is expected to offer a more personal perspective on the creative mind behind some of Indian cinema’s most celebrated soundtracks. Rather than focusing solely on career milestones, Rahman: A Renaissance will delve into the experiences, influences and thought processes that have shaped Rahman as an artist.
Rahman began his journey in the film industry working with composers including Ilaiyaraaja before making his full-fledged debut with Mani Ratnam’s Roja in 1992. He went on to compose for films including Bombay, Dil Se, Lagaan, Rang De Basanti and Rockstar.
His international career reached a major milestone with Danny Boyle’s Slumdog Millionaire, for which he won two Academy Awards, along with two Grammy Awards, a BAFTA and a Golden Globe.
With Rahman himself contributing to the narrative, the upcoming memoir promises to provide readers with a closer look at the ideas, challenges and creative experiences behind his decades-long musical journey. Further details about the book, including its publication, are yet to be announced.
