Locals and tourists in the Kashmir Valley enthusiastically gathered at Srinagar's iconic Ghanta Ghar (Clock Tower area) to usher in the New Year, marking a significant moment as Jammu and Kashmir hosted its first New Year celebration in Lal Chowk after several years.
Organized by the Department of Tourism, Jammu and Kashmir, a vibrant musical event captivated hundreds of attendees at the clock tower. As the clock struck midnight, the jubilant crowd grooved to music, creating a festive atmosphere. The excitement was palpable among both locals and visitors, who expressed their delight at experiencing such a lively celebration in the renowned Srinagar landmark.
Mohammad Yasin, an attendee, shared his joy, saying, "I have come here to witness the celebration of the New Year. We have never seen this kind of celebration before. But this time we saw this and are here to see the celebration. We have never seen this kind of celebration at Lal Chowk. I am very happy, delighted and excited," as reported by ANI.
Taranum, another local resident, highlighted the uniqueness of the event, stating, "Every year, these kinds of events are being held in Jammu and Kashmir, but at Lal Chowk, this is happening for the very first time. As the Centre says, 'Kashmir should be peaceful, and they want it to be peaceful.' But it also depends on the people of the valley how they take it, how they take this event. Like you are seeing, Lal Chowk is being decorated like a bride."
Tourists visiting the Kashmir Valley were also pleasantly surprised by the festivities at Srinagar's Clock Tower area. Srinagar Municipal Corporation Commissioner and CEO of Srinagar Smart City Ltd., Athar Aamir Khan, described the occasion as unprecedented, stating, "This is Srinagar Square, Lal Chowk right now! A city life never seen before. The celebration, the vibrancy like never before!"
Reflecting on the transformation brought about by Srinagar Smart City projects, Khan added, "This is probably the biggest alibi to the transformation that Srinagar city has witnessed with the implementation of Srinagar Smart City (SMC) projects! Immensely proud of my Srinagar Smart City and SMC team for making this happen! Happy New Year!"
The festivities extended beyond Srinagar, as Gulmarg town in Baramulla district showcased a spectacular New Year's Eve celebration featuring laser shows and dance performances. The joyous celebrations were not limited to Jammu and Kashmir, as cities across the country also welcomed the new year with lavish festivities.
