Spotify Introduces ‘Artist Profile Protection’ To Combat AI Fakes And Misattributed Music

Spotify has unveiled a new feature aimed at tackling the growing issue of misattributed tracks and AI-generated impersonations on its platform. Called Artist Profile Protection, the tool is currently being rolled out in a limited beta phase.

The feature gives artists greater control over their profiles by allowing them to review and approve any new music before it goes live under their name. This move comes amid rising concerns over incorrect metadata, duplicate artist names, and increasingly, malicious uploads of AI-generated tracks posing as legitimate releases.

With open distribution systems making it easier than ever to upload music globally, platforms have also become vulnerable to misuse. In some cases, songs have appeared on the wrong artist profiles due to errors, while in others, bad actors have deliberately attached their content to well-known names to gain visibility or revenue.

Spotify’s new system introduces an approval layer, ensuring that only artist-verified releases appear on their official profiles, contribute to streaming data, and reach listeners through recommendations.

As part of the rollout, the company is also testing “artist keys”,unique identifiers that allow trusted distributors to automatically upload pre-approved content, reducing friction in the release process.

The move reflects a broader industry challenge, as AI-generated music and deepfake-style impersonations continue to proliferate across streaming platforms. Several high-profile artists have previously flagged fake tracks appearing under their names, highlighting the urgent need for stronger safeguards.

While the feature offers a significant step toward protecting artist identity and maintaining catalog integrity, it also introduces an additional layer of responsibility for creators, who must actively monitor and approve releases.

Spotify has indicated that the feature will expand beyond its beta phase, positioning Artist Profile Protection as a key part of its ongoing efforts to combat fraud, improve transparency, and restore trust in the streaming ecosystem.
