Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday, November 5, expressed deep sorrow over the passing of renowned folk singer Sharda Sinha, who died at AIIMS Delhi. On X (formerly Twitter), the Prime Minister paid tribute, describing her death as an "irreparable loss" to the world of music.
"I am deeply saddened by the demise of Sharda Sinha Ji, a celebrated folk singer whose Maithili and Bhojpuri songs have resonated with audiences for decades. Her soulful renditions, especially those connected with the festival of Chhath, will continue to echo in our hearts," he wrote.
He added, "Her passing is an irreparable loss for the music world. My condolences are with her family and countless fans. Om Shanti."
Political leaders across the spectrum also shared their condolences. Union Home Minister Amit Shah remembered Sinha’s immense contributions to Indian music, highlighting how she elevated Maithili and Bhojpuri folk music through her talent. "Sharda Sinha Ji, affectionately known as the ‘Bihar Kokila,’ popularized Maithili and Bhojpuri folk songs, enchanting audiences as a playback singer and preserving the folk traditions of Purvanchal. Her voice will be dearly missed, especially during Chhath, where her songs hold a special place in devotees' hearts," he said. Shah extended his condolences to her family, adding, "Om Shanti Shanti Shanti."
Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh also honored Sinha’s legacy, acknowledging her role in bringing Bhojpuri music to the masses. "The loss of Shrimati Sharda Sinha Ji is deeply felt. She was a gifted folk singer who brought Bhojpuri music to a wider audience. Her songs will be cherished for generations. With her passing, folk music has lost a profound voice. My thoughts are with her family and admirers. Om Shanti," he said.
The AIIMS Delhi hospital confirmed that Sharda Sinha passed away on Tuesday evening at 9:20 pm due to refractory shock resulting from septicemia. She had been on ventilator support in her final days.
