Michael Jackson’s Only India Concert Completes 30 Years; Sabbas Joseph Recalls Mumbai Show

Thirty years after Michael Jackson’s only live performance in India, his historic Mumbai concert continues to remain a significant milestone in the country's live entertainment history.

On November 1, 1996, the King of Pop brought his HIStory World Tour to Mumbai, then known as Bombay, performing at the Andheri Sports Complex. The concert marked Jackson’s only live appearance in India during his career and reportedly drew an estimated 35,000 to 50,000 fans.

Featuring a 17-song setlist, the performance turned Mumbai into the centre of an international music spectacle, marking a defining moment for India's emerging live entertainment industry.

The milestone was recently revisited by Wizcraft co-founder Sabbas Joseph, who took to social media to commemorate 30 years of the landmark event and acknowledge the team behind bringing the global music icon to India.

The concert was organised by the Raj Thackeray-led Shiv Udyog Sena in collaboration with Wizcraft. The event was spearheaded by Wizcraft co-founders Sabbas Joseph, Andre Timmins and Viraf Sarkari. Bringing an international superstar of Jackson's stature to India involved extensive planning, production and logistical coordination at a time when the country's live events industry was still developing.

Jackson's visit also generated significant public attention beyond the concert. Thousands of fans gathered at the airport to welcome him, while his Mumbai itinerary included a meeting with Shiv Sena founder Bal Thackeray at his residence, Matoshree, and interactions with fans and children.

Three decades on, the November 1996 concert remains an important chapter in India's live music journey. It demonstrated the potential of the Indian market to host large-scale international performances and brought a global pop phenomenon to Indian audiences.

For the country's live entertainment industry, the anniversary also highlights how far the concert ecosystem has evolved and the scale of ambition, investment, planning and collaboration required to bring global music acts to India.
