Facebook Introduces Portal in Partnership with iHeart, Spotify, and Pandora
Social media giant Facebook has launched Portal and Portal+, two new video communication devices. While these might be aimed at enhancing the video calling experience, Facebook has already partnered with Spotify, Pandora, and iHeartRadio and positioned itself in the smart speaker market. They are also set to announce more partnerships soon.
The devices also come with an Amazon Alexa built in and are activated by using the voice command, ‘Hey Portal.’  After being in the limelight for not having the best data privacy practices, Facebook has done a lot to keep the device secure and maintain the users privacy.  Portal and Portal+ have tools that are designed to give the user complete control of their data. In their launch statement, Facebook also details out the information that the device would be collecting:
  • "Facebook doesn’t listen to, view, or keep the contents of your Portal video calls. Your Portal conversations stay between you and the people you’re calling. In addition, video calls on Portal are encrypted, so your calls are always secure.
  • For added security, Smart Camera and Smart Sound use AI technology that runs locally on Portal, not on Facebook servers. Portal’s camera doesn’t use facial recognition and doesn’t identify who you are.
  • Like other voice-enabled devices, Portal only sends voice commands to Facebook servers after you say, “Hey Portal.” You can delete your Portal’s voice history in your Facebook Activity Log at any time."
