Mumbai-based producer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist sudan, who released his debut album sudan last month, collaborates with singer and poet Ankur Tewari to reimagine one of the tracks, ‘can you’ from his debut album to release the single, ‘can you/hai kyun’?
The 13-track album – that sudan has written, recorded, produced, mixed, and mastered himself – is a delightful assortment of textures, sounds, voices and styles. The pop-leaning album straddles the organic electronic space – where the result is a unique and innovative sound that combines the precision and detail of electronic music with the warmth and texture of live performance, and has received rave reviews from fans and critics alike.
The re-imagined track, ‘can you/hai kyun’ charms effectively and poignantly just through the vocal melodies over plucked guitar while Ankur’s Hindi verses add another dimension to the warm softness of the track that also features the tabla.
“I usually don’t think about language when I’m composing something but as soon as I finished working on ‘can you?’, I could very easily imagine another version of the song in Hindi because of all the classical elements the song has to offer,” reveals sudan.
“What I did not know was that I would have the privilege of working with Ankur Tewari, who I’ve looked up to since the start of my musical journey. He wrote his verses over a matter of a few hours and we recorded the song soon after. It might’ve been the easiest collaboration I’ve been a part of honestly. To have worked with him on a very meaningful song off my debut album was definitely a huge full circle moment,” he adds.
