Spotify has introduced a new in-app parental control feature called "managed accounts" for listeners under the age of 13 on family plans. The feature, which will initially be tested in Denmark, New Zealand, and Sweden, gives parents greater control over the content their children can access on the platform.
With managed accounts, parents can block explicit content across videos, music, and Canvas videos, the looping visuals that accompany music playback. They can also set more specific restrictions by controlling which artists or tracks are available to their children.
This new feature serves as a middle ground between unrestricted access and the more child-friendly Spotify Kids app. It also helps resolve the issue of mixed recommendations on shared accounts by creating separate profiles for each family member, complete with personalized content suggestions.
To activate the feature, parents can go to the Accounts page in the Spotify app, select "Add a listener aged under 13," and follow the setup instructions.
This feature simplifies music recommendations, similar to Instagram Stories, but with WhatsApp’s added layer of end-to-end encryption for privacy.
