Universal Music Group To Launch 72-Hour Subscriber-First Release Window In India From End-August

Universal Music Group (UMG) will introduce a 72-hour subscriber-first release window for all new music releases in India starting end-August 2026, marking a significant shift in the country's music streaming landscape.

Under the new model, new releases from UMG's domestic and international roster will be available exclusively to paid subscribers on participating global and regional music streaming platforms for the first 72 hours before becoming accessible on ad-supported tiers.

The initiative is part of UMG's strategy to strengthen India's paid music subscription ecosystem while creating greater long-term value for artists and songwriters. By encouraging premium listening, the company aims to support a more sustainable music economy and improve creator earnings.

Announcing the move on Instagram and LinkedIn, Devraj Sanyal described India as being at a pivotal stage in the evolution of its music industry.

"India is at an inflection point. We have successfully helped develop the market to its current position. But we believe there is more value to be unlocked for artists and songwriters whose creativity powers the music ecosystem," Sanyal wrote.

He added that as one of the world's fastest-growing music markets, India has the opportunity to redefine how audiences engage with music while ensuring creators receive fairer rewards for their work.

According to Sanyal, the industry's future should be measured not only by the number of listeners but also by the strength of fan engagement and the value created for artists, songwriters and the wider music ecosystem. He said the subscriber-first model is an important step towards building a stronger and more sustainable creative economy.

The rollout reflects the music industry's growing focus on expanding paid subscriptions and improving monetisation for creators as India's recorded music market continues to evolve.
