Veteran Gujarati music composer, arranger and singer Gaurang Vyas passed away in Ahmedabad at the age of 87, leaving behind a decades-long legacy across Gujarati cinema, folk and light music.
The son of renowned composer Avinash Vyas, Gaurang Vyas carried forward his family’s musical legacy while establishing his own identity in Gujarati music.
Vyas began his film career as an assistant to his father in Jesal Toral before making his independent debut as a music director with Lakho Phulani. Over the course of his career, he composed music for more than 100 films, including Ketan Mehta’s Bhavni Bhavai, Maniyaro, Nasibni Balihari, Parki Thapan and Liludi Dharati.
His compositions were performed by several celebrated playback singers, including Lata Mangeshkar, Asha Bhosle, Kishore Kumar, Manna Dey, Mahendra Kapoor and Suman Kalyanpur. He also contributed extensively to devotional, folk and light music through several albums.
Paying tribute to the late musician, Prime Minister Narendra Modi remembered Vyas for carrying forward his father’s musical tradition and making a distinct contribution to Gujarati music.
“His demise leaves Gujarat feeling the loss of a talented creator. His invaluable contribution to the Gujarati music scene will always be remembered,” Modi said, extending condolences to Vyas’ family, friends and admirers.
Vyas was recognised with around 11 state-level Best Music Direction awards. In 2022, he received a Lifetime Achievement Award from Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel, while the Gujarat State Music Academy and Gujarat Tourism also honoured his contribution in 2024.
With his passing, Gujarati music has lost one of its prominent composers whose work across cinema, folk and devotional music continues to remain part of the region’s musical heritage.
