A.R. Rahman Makes Royal Albert Hall Debut With ‘Rangreza’ World Premiere

Music maestro A. R. Rahman marked a landmark moment in his global career with his debut performance at London’s iconic Royal Albert Hall, presenting a unique musical collaboration centred on unity.

Rahman teamed up with UK-based artists Rushil Ranjan and Abi Sampa for the world premiere of Rangreza, an orchestral piece that seamlessly blends Eastern and Western classical traditions. The performance brought together Rahman’s Sunshine Orchestra from Chennai with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra for a four-concert showcase.

Speaking about the piece, Rahman said the idea was to explore whether music could transcend differences and create a sense of unison in today’s world. Calling the Royal Albert Hall a space where “history and music converge,” he described the experience of performing there as both humbling and inspiring.

Alongside the premiere, Rahman revisited some of his celebrated film compositions, including Jaage Hain and Khwaja Mere Khwaja, reimagined in a grand orchestral format. Ranjan noted that the performance aimed to highlight the connections between diverse musical styles.

The production also featured specially choreographed segments by British-Indian dancer Akram Khan, with vocals by the London Voices conducted by Melvin Tay. Soloists Sarthak Kalyani and Janan Sathiendran added Indian classical elements to the performance.

James Ainscough, CEO of the Royal Albert Hall, said the collaboration reflects the power of music to bring people and cultures together, especially in a divided world.
