Counted as among the rising young class of singer-songwriters in India, gini releases her third single of 2024, ‘Sukoon’.
The young artist, who has built a supportive community on Instagram of fans and fellow creators, showcases just why she has come to be so highly rated so quickly. ‘Sukoon’ by gini has also been spotlighted by Spotify’s RADAR as its July release.
A gifted writer – the 18-year-old is also a poet – and the ease with which she knits words together to weave a story is impressive, as evidenced by her Instagram Live series called Write A Song With Me through 2022.
The fresh-sounding track, ‘Sukoon’ is a different offering from her usual orchestra-heavy arrangements while still retaining the quintessential gini charm and stamp.
“The song is based on very strong emotions of wanting to feel ‘sukoon’,” says gini, who finished her schooling earlier this year. “I’d written it during a period of solitude wherein I was reading and writing more than ever. I’d create worlds with every piece of literature I consumed and realised that I was moving through those worlds too fast; I wasn’t stopping to truly bask in the bliss, or ‘sukoon’, of the books. So, I wrote a song to remind me to stop and appreciate the moments and the feelings I was experiencing,” she explains.
She may be inspired by the writings of Swanand Kirkire, production finesse of FINNEAS, Jacob Collier’s harmony stacks and Lianne La Havas’ vocal grace, but gini’s style is very much her own, adapting to different sounds and styles with a chameleon-like quality.
And all her three releases this year have shone a light on her multi-faceted artistic personality, especially her writing. If ‘Ansuna’ was a tender pop song about optimism, ‘Chaukhat’ captured the emotional tax of sadness while ‘Sukoon’ is a song about remembering to smell the proverbial roses, to cherish moments and feelings as you experience them.
“Every new release is a step in a different direction,” she says, adding, “I don’t want to settle into one trodden trail, so I’d rather track a new spiral path, wherein it’s a slightly different direction with each step.”
“gini is the perfect embodiment of everything that is India of the future – local, authentic aesthetics converging with global themes and sounds,” says Molfa co-CEO Dheer Momaya. “She’s got a hyperactive community of engaged listeners, who are eagerly following social media antics, and are deeply invested in her journey as an artist. We’re also pumped to be working with our partners at ‘first.wav’, who have been instrumental in creating the sound and strategising the release and marketing plans,” he adds.
