Oscar- and Grammy-winning composer A.R. Rahman is set to make his debut with the San Francisco Symphony on July 2 at Davies Symphony Hall, presenting his new concert experience, Symphony of Contrasts. The performance has already sold out the venue's 2,743-seat auditorium, reflecting strong demand for the acclaimed composer's first-ever appearance with a symphony orchestra in the United States.
The concert will reimagine Rahman's celebrated body of work through full orchestral arrangements, blending Indian classical music with Western symphonic traditions, alongside elements of pop, world music and rap. Spanning music from Bollywood to Hollywood, the performance is expected to showcase the composer's genre-defying catalogue in an orchestral setting under his own direction.
Best known for scoring more than 120 films, Rahman has earned global recognition through projects including Slumdog Millionaire and Bombay Dreams. His work has helped bridge musical traditions across cultures, making him one of the most influential composers in contemporary cinema.
According to the San Francisco Symphony, the programme aims to elevate Rahman's compositions through orchestral interpretations while celebrating the diversity of his musical influences. The event forms part of the orchestra's 2026 Summer with the Symphony series, which also features performances by artists including St. Vincent and Andrew Bird later this season.
