Jassi Gill's Bollywood Debut & Take On Music Industry

Jassie Gill is a singer turned actor of Punjabi origin and has many hit Punjabi music tracks to his name- Lancer, Gabroo, Dil Tutda, Laden to name a few. After a commendable stint in the Punjabi film industry with movies like Mr & Mrs. 420, Sargi and the like- Jassie is ready to hit the 70mm screen with his first Bollywood Movie “Happy Bhaag Jayegi Returns”. This Aanand L. Rai and Mudassar Aziz duo movie will star him alongside Sonakshi Sinha and Diana Penty.

Punjabi actor-singer will make his Bollywood debut with a sequel to the 2016 romcom. Producer Aanand L Rai and director Mudassar Aziz are all set to roll with Part 2 of their 2016 romcom, 'Happy Bhag Jayegi', which featured Abhay Deol, Diana Penty and Ali Fazal in the lead. This time it's a 'Happy' Sonakshi Sinha headlining the cast of the sequel which went on the floors this month.

In An Exclusive Interview With Loudest , here's what Jassi Gill Had To Say To Us :

Loudest: Tell us about how you got your first Bollywood debut?

Jassi Gill: The director of the movie, Mudassar Aziz, had noticed my work in Punjabi movies and music videos previously. It so happened that for the movie Happy Bhaag Jayegi Returns the team was looking for someone who was well versed with Punjabi mannerisms. Hence, the team came looking out for me in Punjab, and then, everything took turn quickly and now the whole team is working together to create a great film together.

Loudest: What is your character like in the movie?

Jassi Gill: My character in the movie is a Punjabi boy who lives and works abroad. He is a fun character to watch with the right amount of Punjabi charm and wits. That’s all I can reveal at the moment. To unfold the rest of the story, you will have to watch out for the movie once it hits the cinemas.

Loudest: Have you also sung/made songs in/for the film?

Jassi Gill: We are currently trying to device a track that will be used for promotions of the movie. Its still being ideated and if it materializes, it will obviously be a Punjabi number. *chuckles*.

Loudest: Which is your favorite Bollywood film?

Jassi Gill: I’m a big Bollywood buff and for me, Aamir Khan does the magic. Be it any Aamir starrer movie, it automatically becomes a favorite of mine.

Loudest: What’s your take on “HIT” song culture in Bollywood. That is on, “templatisation” of songs?

Jassi Gill: The current “HIT” recipe for a song that has been doing rounds in the industry is that of remaking old classics. I think we have become too used to following the same pattern and letting creativity take a back seat- which is truly heartbreaking. Its great to breath new life into old classics, but that shouldn’t be the only trend that we all begin to follow blindly. We are an industry of talented artists, I’m sure we have a lot more to offer.

Loudest: What would you like to change in the Indian music industry?

Jassi Gill: Piracy is something that our industry needs to get rid of immediately. When artists don’t get due recognition and revenue for their creations, it demoralizes them somewhere down the line. Once this cycle breaks, more people will gain confidence and be encouraged to continue making music and art as they please.

Loudest: What advise would you give to aspiring musicians out there?

Jassi Gill: My advice to any aspiring musician is that there is definitely a light at the end of the tunnel. Too many people give up on their dreams too quick thinking that they can’t make it any further. Believe in yourself and the Universe will follow suit!

This is the age of multi-dimensional, talented artists turning into entrepreneurs. Jassi Gill has ventured into Bollywood now and will continue promoting his independent music constantly. It was a pleasure connecting with him. Kudos to Speed Records for their constant support towards incredible Punjabi Talent!
