Mahesh Rao to lead WMG’s Bengaluru tech expansion and India engineering strategy
Warner Music Group (WMG) is expanding its global technology operations with the upcoming launch of a new international technology hub in Bengaluru, strengthening the company’s engineering and technology capabilities across its global music business.
The Bengaluru hub will drive technical innovation across WMG’s global technology ecosystem, supporting initiatives spanning music distribution, data infrastructure and technology products. Its mandate will include building and scaling core data pipelines, audience and marketing data products, as well as advancing engineering capabilities through artificial intelligence and other emerging technologies.
The initiative is being led by Mahesh Rao, Director of Software Engineering and Site Lead for India, who is responsible for defining WMG’s engineering strategy, organisational structure, budgets and operating model in the country. Rao reports to Toronto-based Chief Technology Officer Leho Nigul. Before joining WMG, he was with Walmart Global Tech, where he led software development initiatives for the retail major.
The new Bengaluru facility is scheduled to officially open next month, building on the foundations established by WMG’s India technology team over the past year. The company is currently recruiting talent across multiple technology disciplines as it looks to further strengthen its global engineering capabilities from India.
“We’re building a world-class music tech organization right here in Bengaluru. The caliber of talent in this market is exceptional, and we’re looking for ambitious engineers and innovators who want to help shape the future of the global music industry,” said Mahesh Rao, Director of Software Engineering and Site Lead for India, WMG.
Leho Nigul, Chief Technology Officer, WMG, said Bengaluru will play a central role in the company’s global engineering strategy. “We’re investing heavily in local leadership, modern tech stacks, and globally competitive compensation to attract engineers who want to solve complex, high-throughput systems problems at the intersection of music and AI,” he added.
Jay Mehta, Managing Director, Warner Music India, said the expansion reflects WMG’s long-term commitment to the Indian market. The company established its India presence six years ago with its headquarters in Mumbai.
“Since establishing our presence in India six years ago with our Mumbai headquarters, WMG has been deeply committed to the market. Our global leadership recognizes the incredible opportunities here, from our vibrant creative ecosystem to our world-class technology talent. I’m delighted that Mahesh is spearheading our expansion in Bengaluru,” Mehta said.
The Bengaluru expansion positions India as an increasingly important technology and engineering base within WMG’s global operations, with the company looking to combine the country’s deep technology talent pool with the evolving demands of the global music industry.
