New AI Persona Badges Put Transparency at the Centre of Artist Discovery

Spotify To Label AI-Generated Artist Profiles With ‘AI Persona’ Badges From September

Spotify is set to introduce ‘AI Persona’ badges for artist profiles representing AI-generated identities, in a move aimed at giving listeners greater transparency about who,or what, stands behind the music they discover on the platform.

The badges are expected to begin appearing from mid-September across artist profile banners and About sections, as well as in search results and track rows within playlists.

Under the new system, artists can voluntarily disclose through Spotify for Artists that their public profile represents an AI Persona. Spotify will also review profiles whose public identities appear to use photorealistic AI-generated imagery. Profiles flagged through the platform’s review process will be notified and given the option to self-disclose their AI status or appeal the decision.

Listeners will also be able to see whether an artist voluntarily disclosed its AI Persona status or whether the designation was applied following Spotify’s review.

Spotify said the initiative is focused on the public identity of an artist, rather than the tools or technology used to produce individual tracks. As a result, a human musician who uses generative AI during the music-making process would not automatically receive an AI Persona badge.

The platform also plans to limit the visibility of AI Persona profiles within its recommendation ecosystem. Such profiles will be excluded by default from editorial and algorithmic recommendations unless a listener already follows the artist. This means they will generally not be surfaced to users who have not actively chosen to engage with them.

The move comes as streaming platforms face a growing influx of AI-generated music and increasingly sophisticated synthetic artist identities. The development has intensified conversations around transparency, recommendation systems and how listeners can distinguish real-world performers from entirely artificial personas.

Spotify’s latest measure does not seek to prohibit AI-generated music. Instead, it places the focus on transparency around artist identity, giving listeners clearer information while introducing additional safeguards around how AI-generated personas are surfaced on the platform.
