Sony Music Sues Myntra For Rs5 Crore Over Alleged Copyright Infringement

Sony Music has filed a copyright infringement lawsuit against online fashion retailer Myntra, taking the matter to the Mumbai High Court. The music label has alleged that Myntra used multiple tracks from its catalogue without securing the proper authorisation or licenses. Citing repeated violations, Sony Music is now seeking ?5 crore in damages for what it describes as unlawful and commercial exploitation of its copyrighted material.

According to a report by Hindustan Times, the petition submitted to the court claims that Myntra “illegally and unauthorizedly used, broadcasted, communicated to the public, and exploited” numerous sound recordings owned by Sony Music across its e-commerce platform, both on the Myntra app and website.

Despite issuing a formal cease-and-desist notice to Myntra, Sony asserts that the platform continued to use the disputed tracks in promotional videos and digital campaigns aimed at advertising its products and enhancing its brand visibility. The lawsuit contends that the use of these tracks—some even synced with video content—was done without any consent or licensing agreement, directly violating the label’s copyright.

The petition further states that Sony Music discovered the alleged infringement in February 2025 and claims that Myntra continued to benefit commercially by synchronizing the tracks with branded content on its digital storefront. It accuses the platform of knowingly exploiting its intellectual property without regard for due process or compensation.

Among the songs listed in the complaint are “Ishq Di Baajiyan” from Soorma, “Gal Mitthi Mitthi” and “Behke Behke” from Aisha, and “Zaroor” from Zaroor, alongside 17 other tracks. Sony Music argues that these unauthorised usages not only undermined the value of its rights but also contributed to financial losses, prompting its current demand for monetary compensation.

At the time of reporting, Myntra has not issued a public statement in response to the allegations.
