Music composer Salim Merchant has shared his perspective on recent comments by A. R. Rahman regarding alleged communal bias in the Hindi film industry, saying that while Rahman may have spoken from his own experience, he personally does not believe such bias exists in Bollywood.
Rahman had earlier suggested that he might be receiving fewer offers in Bollywood and hinted that religion could be one of the factors influencing opportunities. The remark sparked conversations across the film and music fraternity about inclusivity within the industry.
Reacting to the claim, Merchant said that he respectfully disagrees with the idea of widespread communal bias. According to him, Rahman’s continued association with major projects, such as composing for the upcoming mythological film Ramayana, indicates that the industry remains open to talent irrespective of background.
Merchant emphasised that his view is based on his own experience working in the industry. At the same time, he acknowledged that Rahman may have had different personal experiences that shaped his perspective.
The discussion has since drawn attention within the film and music community, with several industry voices weighing in on the evolving dynamics of opportunities and representation in Bollywood.
