Music composer and filmmaker Palash Muchhal has been accused of financial misconduct in Maharashtra’s Sangli district, where a producer alleges he was cheated out of Rs 40 lakh in a film investment deal, prompting a preliminary police inquiry.
A 34-year-old actor-producer, Vidnyan Mane, filed a complaint with the Sangli Superintendent of Police, claiming Muchhal approached him in December 2023 with an investment opportunity tied to an upcoming movie titled Nazaria. According to the complaint, Muchhal assured Mane that his investment would yield profits once the film was released on an OTT platform and even offered him a producer’s credit and a role in the project. Mane reportedly transferred a total of Rs 40 lakh to Muchhal by March 2025.
However, the film allegedly never materialised, and when Mane sought a refund, he claims Muchhal stopped responding and eventually blocked his calls. Frustrated by the lack of communication and the stalled project, Mane approached police, submitting transaction records and other evidence along with his complaint.
Police confirm preliminary probe
Police officials confirmed that the complaint has been registered and a preliminary inquiry is underway to verify the facts. As of now, no formal First Information Report (FIR) has been registered, and authorities are reviewing the documentation submitted by the complainant.
The allegations have drawn widespread attention not only because of the financial claim but also due to Muchhal’s recent public visibility following the widely covered cancellation of his planned wedding to Indian cricketer Smriti Mandhana late last year.
Muchhal denies allegations
Responding to the developments, Muchhal took to social media to deny the accusations, describing them as “entirely baseless and factually incorrect.” In his statement, he called the allegations malicious and intended to harm his reputation, and said his legal team is exploring all available avenues. “These claims will not go unchallenged,” he wrote, while urging fans and the public to await the outcome of due process.
The case highlights the increasing scrutiny around film financing arrangements, especially when high-profile personalities are involved. Legal experts note that formal contracts and transparent documentation are critical in such deals to protect all parties and facilitate accountability.
Authorities say the inquiry will continue, and a decision on whether to register a formal FIR could depend on the outcome of the preliminary investigation.
