Universal Music Group (UMG) has announced the appointment of veteran finance executive Matt Ellis as its new Chief Financial Officer, effective June 9, 2025. Based in Santa Monica, Ellis will oversee UMG’s global financial operations and report directly to Chairman & CEO Sir Lucian Grainge.
Ellis previously served as Executive Vice President and CFO at Verizon Communications, where he led the company’s finance strategy and operations. UMG praised his “outstanding track record” and ability to drive growth through strategic financial leadership, highlighting his experience across CFO, treasury, FP&A, and corporate development roles at two Fortune 100 companies. He is also a Chartered Accountant in the UK.
He succeeds Boyd Muir, who was elevated to Chief Operating Officer in October 2024. Muir had served as UMG’s EVP, CFO, and President of Operations since 2010, continuing in the CFO role during the transition.
Ellis’s appointment signals UMG’s continued focus on strategic financial growth as it navigates a fast-evolving global music and entertainment landscape.
