French performing arts organization SACEM first to join Association for Electronic Music (AFEM)

The French performing rights organization Society of Composers, Authors and Music Publishers (SACEM) becomes the first performance rights organization to join the Association for Electronic Music (AFEM):

The new association announced on 5th June 2019, aims to connect SACEM to emerging technology and pioneering practices in electronic music for its artists. It also allows them to perfect their roles in licensing, collection and distribution of royalties in order to bring more transparency and value for its electronic music members.The common aim for both organizations is to to remunerate the creators of electronic music in the fairest and most equitable way. Electronic music market in France is worth an estimated €416 million ($466 million), while the global electronic music market has an estimated value of $7.2 billion. A recent study in the IMS Business Report found electronic music to be the third most popular music genre, with an estimated 1.5 billion listeners. SACEM CEO - Jean-Noël Tronc in a statement,said:
Our membership of AFEM, a leading association in the world of electronic music with an international dimension, marks an important and essential step in continuing our efforts on behalf of the players in the ecosystem. Together, we will continue to make every effort to continue to promote electronic music at its rightful value, creating the best conditions for creation.”
SACEM represents artists like DJ Snake, David Guetta, Jean-Michel Jarre, Justice, Pedro Winter and Laurent Garnier on  and many more on its roster of 164,840 members, including 20,012 foreign creators of 166 nationalities and more than 121 million works from a worldwide repertoire. On the other hand, The Association of Electronic Music (AFEM) is an international trade association that represents the interests of companies and individuals who work in electronic music and advocates best practices for the genre. It has over 175 member companies in more than 25 countries. AFEM general manager Greg Marshall, added:
SACEM demonstrate a proactive and collaborative approach to engaging with AFEM and we welcome this progressive move towards knowledge sharing, problem solving and change,” added . I look forward to deepening our relationship to better serve the industry & creators of the electronic music scene.”
The main area of expertise for AFEM is to combat piracy through lobbying and education efforts for its member organizations. AFEM launched their "Get Played Get Paid" initiative in 2014 which essentially utilizes music recognition technology to ensure more accurate royalty payments for electronic music played in live settings. They also announced a deal with the music identification company DJ Monitor in 2017 for setting up clubs and festivals with audio fingerprinting technology to better identify the tracks played. The DJ Monitor technology will be implemented in France following this new association with SACEM. It also marks the beginning of the first economic study of electronic music in France and creation of online documentation centre electronicmusicfactory.com.
