Guest Column: AI Misuse By Brands Could Hit The Music Industry First

Let me start with a prediction that most brand strategy rooms and creative studios are not ready to hear. A large number of brands currently investing in AI-driven communication, marketing, and audience engagement will not use it well. They will use it fast, they will use it cheaply, and within the next two to three years, many of them will be dealing with trust crises that their own AI systems helped create. This is not pessimism, but a pattern that is already visible to anyone paying attention. The acceleration is real, and in industries built on emotional connection, the consequences will surface faster than expected. 

In most sectors, this will show up as gradual erosion, where audiences slowly begin to disengage without clear moments of rupture. However, in music and entertainment, the impact will be immediate and far more visible. This is because trust in these industries is not transactional or functional, but deeply emotional. Fans do not simply consume content, they build identity, belonging, and personal meaning around artists and cultural brands. When that emotional contract is disrupted, the reaction is not mild dissatisfaction but a sense of disconnect that is difficult to repair. 

The Speed Trap in Culture 

The most dangerous thing about AI as a creative and communication tool is not what it gets wrong, but what it enables at scale. Even in music and entertainment, where speed has always been part of the ecosystem, there has historically been an invisible layer of human intent and judgment behind what reaches the audience. Campaigns, releases, and fan engagement may move quickly, but they are still shaped by cultural understanding and creative intuition. That layer acts as a filter, ensuring that what is produced aligns with the artist’s voice and audience expectations. 

AI removes that layer almost entirely by allowing content to be generated, tested, and distributed at unprecedented speed. Today, artist teams and labels can create entire promotional ecosystems in hours, from captions and fan interactions to visual assets and narrative arcs. However, in this process, hundreds of small decisions are made without pausing to evaluate whether the output feels real or meaningful. In culture, perception matters more than precision, and audiences are highly sensitive to anything that feels engineered rather than expressed. Speed without cultural judgment does not create efficiency, it creates dilution at scale. 

What Misuse Looks Like in Music and Entertainment 

When discussions around AI misuse arise, the focus often shifts to extreme scenarios such as deepfake artists, cloned voices, or synthetic collaborations. While these are legitimate concerns and

will continue to evolve, they are not where most brands and creative ecosystems will face immediate challenges. The real misuse will occur in quieter, more routine ways that do not initially appear problematic but gradually weaken audience trust. 

This includes AI-generated content that technically aligns with brand tone but lacks emotional depth, automated fan interactions that mimic engagement without genuine presence, and campaigns designed for algorithmic success rather than cultural relevance. These actions may deliver short-term results in terms of reach or engagement, but they slowly erode the authenticity that audiences value. In a space where fandom is built on emotional investment, even subtle signals of inauthenticity accumulate over time, leading to silent disengagement rather than visible backlash. 

The Illusion of Engineered Fandom 

AI has also made it possible to simulate engagement at a scale that was previously unattainable. Streams can be amplified, conversations can be artificially initiated, and viral moments can be strategically engineered to create the appearance of cultural momentum. From a metrics perspective, this can look like success, with numbers reflecting growth and increased activity across platforms. However, these indicators often fail to capture the underlying reality of audience sentiment. 

Culture does not operate on metrics alone, but on shared belief and organic participation. When audiences begin to sense that engagement is being manufactured rather than emerging naturally, the shift is subtle but significant. While numbers may continue to rise temporarily, the meaning behind them diminishes, and the connection between creator and audience weakens. In entertainment, where meaning and emotional resonance are central, this loss is far more damaging than any short-term gain. 

Disclosure Is Not a Creative Risk 

There is a growing tendency among brands, labels, and artist teams to integrate AI into their workflows without explicitly acknowledging its use. This approach is often driven by the assumption that transparency may reduce the perceived authenticity of the output. However, this assumption underestimates the awareness and expectations of modern audiences, particularly within music and entertainment. 

Audiences today are not unaware of AI, they are actively observing how it is being used. The key factor influencing their perception is not the presence of AI, but the honesty with which it is deployed. When fans believe they are engaging with a real human interaction and later discover that it was automated, the resulting response is not neutral. It creates a sense of deception that can damage long-term trust. Transparency, when handled thoughtfully, does not weaken the connection between artist and audience, but strengthens it by reinforcing credibility. 

The Line Is Simpler Than It Seems

The conversation around AI ethics has become increasingly complex, with multiple frameworks, policies, and guidelines being developed across industries. While these efforts are important, the fundamental decision that brands and creative teams need to make is relatively straightforward. The core question is whether AI is being used to enhance the audience experience or to replace something that audiences inherently value. 

AI that improves discovery, enhances accessibility, or supports meaningful engagement can add significant value. On the other hand, AI that simulates emotion, replaces genuine creative expression, or manufactures connection prioritizes efficiency over authenticity. In music and cultural spaces, audiences are particularly sensitive to this distinction and can quickly identify when the balance shifts. Brands that fail to recognise this difference may not need formal feedback mechanisms to understand their missteps, as audience behaviour will reflect it. 

Trust Is the Only Thing You Cannot Automate 

Every measurable aspect of modern communication and entertainment can be amplified through AI. Reach can be expanded, engagement can be increased, and content can be produced at scale with minimal effort. These capabilities create the illusion of growth and efficiency, encouraging brands to prioritise output and optimization. However, these metrics do not equate to trust, which operates on entirely different principles. 

Trust is built gradually through consistent behaviour, honesty, and genuine value delivery. It requires time, effort, and a clear alignment between what a brand or artist claims and what they demonstrate. Unlike other metrics, trust cannot be generated or scaled through automation. It can, however, be eroded rapidly when audiences perceive inauthenticity or manipulation. The brands and creative ecosystems that understand this distinction will use AI as a supportive tool, while those that treat it as a shortcut will eventually face the consequences of that choice.
