During this time of year, Indian classical musicians find their schedules packed with performances, and sitarist Rishab Rikhiram Sharma is no exception. Recognized as the last disciple of the legendary Pandit Ravi Shankar, Rishab is set to embark on a multi-city tour across India from April to May.
Titled Sitar For Mental Health, the 10-city tour will blend classical music with contemporary sensibilities, covering Delhi, Mumbai, Indore, Ahmedabad, Kolkata, Pune, Hyderabad, Bengaluru, Jaipur, and Chandigarh. Explaining his vision for a classical-heavy tour infused with modern elements, Rishab says, "We are witnessing a fascinating cultural shift. Ancient ragas are resonating with contemporary listeners in new ways. Classical music isn’t just surviving in the digital age; it’s thriving. Young people are increasingly drawn to the transformative power of these age-old melodies, recognizing the emotional depth and resonance they offer—something often missing in today’s music."
Describing his two-hour concerts as a “reimagined offering,” he shares that he will intertwine the sitar’s timeless sound with innovative sound healing techniques, aiming to create an immersive wellness experience.
Born into a family of musical instrument makers—a legacy that began in Lahore in 1920 with his grandfather—Rishab picked up the sitar at the age of 10. His Sitar For Mental Health set has earned global recognition, including an invitation to perform at former U.S. President Joe Biden’s annual Diwali celebrations in 2022. He has also frequently performed at tribute concerts honoring Pandit Ravi Shankar, continuing the legacy of his iconic guru.
