From India to Brazil, Diwali Listening Spikes Around The Globe
Diwali is one of the biggest seasons of celebration not just for those in India, but also for the diaspora. This year, Spotify looked at how - and where - listeners streamed music during the festive season, between October 18-28, 2019. While Diwali-themed playlists saw traction starting two weeks before the festival, on October 27th (the actual day), global streams of these playlists had increased by nearly 4400%. The spike came predominantly from listeners in India, followed by Canada, Australia, Malaysia, UK, Singapore, and the US. This is perhaps not surprising, given that most of those countries are known to have some of the highest population of India diaspora, including Indians living outside their country, and people of Indian origin. From October 18-28, party music reigned strong with Bollywood tracks being the most-streamed from Diwali-themed playlists. The songs that streamed the most on Spotify were:
  1. O Saki Saki (From "Batla House")
  2. The Jawaani Song (From “Student of The Year 2”)
  3. The Hook Up Song (From “Student of The Year 2”)
  4. Crazy Habibi Vs Decent Munda (From "Arjun Patiala")
  5. Ghungroo (From "War")
  6. Radhe Radhe (From “Dream Girl”)
  7. Hauli Hauli (From "De De Pyaar De")
  8. Psycho Saiyaan (From "Saaho")
  9. Proper Patola (From “Namaste England”)
  10. Coca Cola (From "Luka Chuppi")
Many of these tracks are featured in Spotify-curated Diwali playlists, including Diwali Bash and Diwali Shuffle. Here's another interesting insight - nearly 50%of the streams from Spotify’s Aartis & Bhajans playlist, which features hymns and devotional music, came from 18-34-year-old son the platform, an age group that in India, generally tends to favour pop. Currently, there are more than 9500 Diwali-themed playlists on Spotify, many of them user-generated, with the highest number of these created in the US, followed by the UK, India, Canada, Australia, Singapore, Sweden, Malaysia, Germany,and Brazil. And finally, within India, these are the states that streamed the most Diwali-related music between October 18-28, 2019:

  2. Jharkhand
  3. Punjab
  4. Madhya Pradesh
  5. Uttar Pradesh
  6. Rajasthan
  7. Himachal Pradesh
  8. Chandigarh
  9. Chhattisgarh
  10. West Bengal
