Renowned tabla virtuoso Zakir Hussain, celebrated as one of the greatest percussionists of all time, passed away at 73 in San Francisco, US, due to heart-related ailments. His demise marks a monumental loss to the world of Indian classical music, with heartfelt tributes pouring in globally.
Hussain, a four-time Grammy winner and recipient of India’s Padma Vibhushan, leaves behind a legacy unmatched in the realm of music. Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath called his passing an “irreparable loss” to music, praying for strength for his grieving family and fans.
Throughout his illustrious career, Hussain was instrumental in breaking musical boundaries. He spearheaded groundbreaking projects like Masters of Percussion, Planet Drum, Tabla Beat Science, and CrossCurrents, collaborating with global icons such as Mickey Hart, Béla Fleck, Dave Holland, and Herbie Hancock. His innovative spirit led him to compose three concertos, including the first tabla concerto premiered by the Symphony Orchestra of India.
Beyond music, Hussain became a cultural icon. In 1988, he was the face of the iconic Taj Mahal Tea advertisement, immortalizing the tagline “Wah Taj.” He also ventured into cinema, contributing music to films like Manto and Mr. and Mrs. Iyer and acting in productions such as Heat and Dust and Saaz.
Known for his charisma, broad smile, and signature curly locks, Hussain humorously recalled being named the "sexiest man" by Gentleman magazine in 1994, ahead of Bollywood legend Amitabh Bachchan.
Hussain was deeply principled about his art, advocating for music to be experienced in its purest form. He preferred concert halls over private gatherings and famously insisted on closing doors during performances to prevent latecomers from disrupting the experience.
A recipient of numerous honors, Zakir Hussain was decorated with the Padma Shri, Padma Bhushan, and Padma Vibhushan in India, alongside the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award, the USA’s National Heritage Fellowship, and France’s Order of Arts and Letters.
With his passing, the world bids farewell to a true maestro whose music transcended borders, resonating with millions and leaving an indelible mark on the global stage.
