Warner Music Group (WMG) has acquired AI attribution company Sureel AI, strengthening its capabilities to track, manage and monetise the use of copyrighted content within artificial intelligence systems.
The acquisition reflects WMG’s growing focus on ensuring that artists, songwriters and rightsholders are properly recognised and compensated when their creative works are used to train AI models or influence AI-generated outputs. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.
Founded by Dr. Tamay Aykut, Sureel AI has developed technology that creates an “AI DNA” profile for creative content. The platform breaks down works into their underlying components and traces how those elements are referenced, replicated or incorporated by AI systems.
Beyond attribution, Sureel offers tools for intellectual property provenance, compliance and audit reporting, AI model optimisation, and business intelligence. The company has also built a name, image and likeness (NIL) attribution suite that can monitor the use of artist voices, visual identities and performance traits across AI-generated content, helping detect activities such as voice cloning, AI avatars and stylistic imitation.
According to WMG, Sureel maintains a registry containing millions of music assets and has developed infrastructure capable of extending attribution capabilities beyond music to video and image-based content.
Following the acquisition, Sureel will continue to operate independently while benefiting from Warner Music Group’s resources and global scale.
Commenting on the deal, Robert Kyncl, CEO of Warner Music Group, said AI offers significant opportunities for fan engagement and value creation, but also increases the need to identify and protect the human creators behind original works. He noted that the acquisition would strengthen WMG’s ability to manage and monetise intellectual property as well as name, image, likeness and voice rights.
Dr. Aykut said creators and rightsholders should have visibility into how AI systems interact with their work and share in the value generated from those interactions. He added that partnering with Warner Music Group would help accelerate Sureel’s mission of improving transparency and unlocking new opportunities across the music and entertainment industries.
