Shreya Ghoshal Expands Her Independent Music Journey With New Single ‘Bairi Piya’

Nearly three decades into a celebrated playback career, Shreya Ghoshal continues to expand her musical repertoire beyond films with her latest independent single, ‘Bairi Piya’, released by Universal Music India.

While playback singing remains central to Ghoshal’s career, independent music has increasingly given the singer room to experiment with new sounds, collaborations and creative formats. Her latest release follows this ongoing exploration, bringing her into a contemporary pop setting while retaining elements of Indian classical music.

Ghoshal’s recent independent work has also seen her collaborate across languages and generations. Her appearance on ‘Kalyani (Remix)’, alongside ARJN, KDS and FIFTY4, reimagined MVR’s Malayalam independent track. The original song had crossed 200 million streams, while the remix featuring Ghoshal reached No. 1 on Indian music charts and also charted internationally.

With ‘Bairi Piya’, Ghoshal takes a softer and more intimate musical approach. The track blends warm synths, clean beats and a gentle rhythmic pulse with subtle classical influences.

Speaking about the release, Ghoshal said independent music has remained an important part of her journey as it allows her to explore beyond the conventional playback format.

“Independent music has been an important part of my journey for a long time because it gives me the freedom to explore songs and sounds outside the usual spaces I get to experience through playback music,” she said.

She added that every independent project has allowed her to experiment with sounds, collaborate with different artists and approach music differently.

“With ‘Bairi Piya’, I was drawn to the melody and the simplicity of the song, and I enjoyed exploring this softer, contemporary space,” Ghoshal said.

The release comes as India’s music ecosystem continues to blur the boundaries between film and independent music, with established playback voices increasingly exploring direct-to-audience releases and cross-genre collaborations.

With more than 50 million monthly Spotify listeners, Ghoshal continues to command a substantial global digital audience. ‘Bairi Piya’ adds another dimension to her evolving repertoire, underscoring her continued interest in exploring music beyond the traditional playback space.
