The IAB Tech Lab has released Version 2.3 of its Podcast Technical Measurement Guidelines, introducing updated standards aimed at improving the way podcast downloads, audiences and advertising are measured across both audio and video podcast formats. The revised guidelines expand measurement recommendations to reflect the growing popularity of video podcasts while refining server-side measurement practices. Among the key changes are new guidance for URL prefix measurement, RSS enclosure URL changes, invalid traffic filtering and different approaches to measurement windows, helping companies adopt more consistent reporting methodologies.
One of the notable updates is the replacement of the term "listener" with "podcast consumer", a move that acknowledges evolving consumption habits across audio and video platforms. According to the IAB Tech Lab, the terminology shift also lays the groundwork for the next major update, Version 3.0, expected in 2027, which will place greater emphasis on streaming video podcasts.
The guidelines continue to provide a common framework for measuring podcast downloads, audience reach and ad delivery using server-side log data. By standardising these metrics, the IAB Tech Lab aims to reduce discrepancies across publishers and technology vendors while giving advertisers greater confidence in campaign reporting and performance measurement.
