“Drifting From Our Roots”: Gurdas Maan On The State Of Punjabi Music

Veteran Punjabi singer Gurdas Maan has voiced concern over the evolving direction of modern Punjabi music, warning that the industry is increasingly drifting away from its cultural roots.

In a recent interaction, Maan pointed out that while Punjabi music has achieved unprecedented global reach, much of its contemporary output is losing touch with the essence of Punjab, its language, poetry, and emotional depth. He stressed that earlier music was deeply rooted in storytelling and tradition, whereas today’s trends often prioritise commercial appeal over authenticity.

Highlighting the importance of preserving cultural identity, Maan emphasised that music should reflect the soil it comes from, rather than merely chasing viral success. He also underscored the need for younger artists to reconnect with folk influences and lyrical substance, which have historically defined Punjabi music.

Despite his critique, Maan acknowledged the global rise of Punjabi music as a positive shift, urging a balance between innovation and tradition to ensure the genre retains its original soul even as it evolves.
