A.R. Rahman has described his collaboration with legendary Hollywood composer Hans Zimmer on the upcoming mythological epic Ramayana as an “epic collaboration,” saying Zimmer’s involvement could significantly expand the film’s global appeal.
Speaking about the ambitious project in recent interviews, Rahman said bringing Zimmer on board for a story deeply rooted in Indian culture would help introduce the film to wider international audiences.
“I think it’s an epic collaboration. To do a film which belongs to our country and culture, and bring Hans Zimmer into it almost like an ambassador to the world, especially for non-Indians, is very special,” Rahman said.
He added that Zimmer’s global reputation and fan following would naturally attract audiences curious to see his interpretation of an Indian mythological story.
“His name alone is going to make many people watch the film. At least a section of the global audience will want to see what Hans Zimmer has done in an Indian movie,” he noted.
The collaboration marks one of the most high-profile international music partnerships in Indian cinema, bringing together two Oscar- and Grammy-winning composers on what is being positioned as one of the country’s most ambitious film projects to date.
Backed by a reported budget of nearly Rs 4,000 crore, Ramayana is being mounted on a massive scale with cutting-edge visual technology and extensive world-building. Rahman reportedly praised the film’s early 3D visuals, saying the footage was unlike anything he had previously seen either in India or internationally.
The film stars Ranbir Kapoor, Sai Pallavi and Yash in lead roles and is planned as a two-part cinematic franchise. The first instalment is expected to release during Diwali 2026, followed by the second part in 2027.
Industry observers believe the Rahman-Zimmer collaboration could become a landmark moment for Indian cinema’s global ambitions, combining Indian storytelling traditions with international-scale production values and musical appeal.
With growing worldwide interest in large-scale mythological and fantasy storytelling, the makers are reportedly aiming to position Ramayana as a global cinematic spectacle on par with major Hollywood franchises.
