Academy Award-winning composer A. R. Rahman has been honoured by Olivia Chow following the presentation of his newly commissioned composition “Rangreza,” created in collaboration with composer Rushil Ranjan.
Rahman shared the recognition on social media, expressing gratitude to the city and its mayor. “Thank you Toronto for this wonderful honor. It was such a pleasure to meet you Olivia Chow. See you all tomorrow,” he wrote.
In her message of recognition, Chow praised Rahman’s contribution to music and culture, acknowledging the impact his work has had on audiences globally. “Thank you for sharing your time and extraordinary talent as part of this special event. “Rangreza” is a newly commissioned orchestral work by Rahman and Ranjan that blends Sufi influences with global musical traditions. The composition was performed by the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and London Voices, alongside Associate Artist Abi Sampa. The piece explores the shared spiritual and musical language across cultures through a fusion of Indian and Western classical elements.
Rahman recently premiered the composition at Royal Albert Hall as part of a three-night orchestral showcase featuring emerging and internationally acclaimed musicians. The production brought together Indian and Western classical traditions in a large-scale live presentation.
On the film front, Rahman most recently composed music for Tere Ishk Mein starring Dhanush and directed by Aanand L Rai.
The composer also has a packed slate of upcoming projects including Peddi starring Ram Charan, Moon Walk featuring Prabhu Deva, Ramayana: Part 1 and Ramayana: Part 2 backed by Namit Malhotra, Genie starring Ravi Mohan, D56, as well as an untitled film by Mani Ratnam starring Vijay Sethupathi and Sai Pallavi.
