The National Centre for the Performing Arts (NCPA) is set to present the world premiere of The Monk and The Warrior, marking the theatrical debut of a cross-cultural epic written by Mahesh Dattani.
Conceived and directed by Jonathan Taikina Taylor, with music by Eero Hämeenniemi, the production blends Eastern and Western storytelling traditions into a visually rich stage experience.
At its core, the play explores a unique love story between a bodhisattva and Alexander, weaving queer narratives across time, space, and cultures. The story unfolds through a surreal journey that draws from both Indian and Western mythologies, reimagining classic tales to examine the complexities of love, identity, and belonging across cultural boundaries.
Through reinterpretations of stories such as the Monkey and the Crocodile, Shams and Rumi, and mythological figures like Fortuna and Jyotish, the play reflects on emotional vulnerability and the challenges of cross-cultural relationships.
Designed as a 75-minute production suitable for audiences aged 13 and above, The Monk and The Warrior will be staged across multiple shows from April 2 to April 5 at NCPA, with ticket prices starting at Rs 450 for members and Rs 500 for non-members.
The production positions itself as a contemporary theatrical offering that combines narrative depth, music, and visual storytelling to explore universal themes of connection and acceptance.
