Though Valentine’s day has gone past, the mantra of self-love is one that needs to be adopted round the year. Ardently advocating this through their latest song ‘Sunshine on the Street’, are Hyderabad-based Pranati Khanna aka Peekay and Andrea Tariang from Shillong. Both singers are known as steadfast supporters of the LGBTQIA+ community, and also of the creative arts and alternative forms of expression. Their latest song – the first one they have created together – is being described as the feel good anthem of 2022. The song released on February 11, just in time for the universal day of love.
Peekay is two times TEDx Speaker and recipient of Asia 500 Inc. Award for her contribution in art and music. She began her musical journey by performing at pubs, while studying a course in animation. Before she knew it, she was the toast of the town. She decided to go solo in 2020 and released her first single ‘Good, Old Fashioned in Love’. The track was produced by Grammy nominated producer Jonathan Anand Wesley and hit 20,000 listens in the first month of release. Its success spurred her to release ‘Dunno’, which was followed by ‘Much Better’ in March 2021, for which she once again collaborated with Jonathan Anand Wesley.
‘Sunshine on the Street’ is her fifth track.Andrea is a singer-songwriter, as well as an actor and model, who acted in popular Bollywood film ‘Pink’, and is the brand ambassador of Garnier Fructis Bright Complete. All the models who are part of the video of ‘Sunshine in the Street’ are friends and allies of the LGBTQIA+ communities from Hyderabad and Meghalaya. Their freestyle dancing, unabashed singing, and visuals of goofing around in the video, certainly live up to the ‘feel-good’ promise made by the song.
Written and composed by Peekay and Andrea Tariang together, the song has been produced by Jonathan Edward, with whom Peekay has worked on a number of occasions. The mixing and mastering was done by Meshac Daniel. Though shot remotely in their own home towns with a green screen backdrop, the singers credit Couch Potato Productions for putting it all together and adding the right amount of pep and buoyancy to make the video really stand out. Peekay’s wardrobe and styling was done by local brand Kothacheru by Madhu Janakiram. The song ‘Sunshine on the Street’ premiered on Rolling Stone India and will soon be airing on VH1. It can also be streamed on all major music streaming platforms.
