Netflix has appointed music rights specialist Sheetal Tripathy as Counsel, Music Business Affairs, marking a significant move for the streaming giant as it continues to strengthen its music legal and business affairs capabilities in India.
Based in Mumbai, Tripathy joins Netflix after nearly a decade at Khimani & Associates, where she built extensive expertise across music rights, licensing, commercial transactions and intellectual property matters within the entertainment sector.
Over the course of her legal career, Tripathy has advised artists, record labels, music publishers and distributors on a wide range of commercial and legal issues. Her experience spans contract negotiations, cross-border transactions, infringement matters and strategic advisory work for both domestic and international players operating in India's rapidly evolving music market.
Tripathy joined Khimani & Associates as an Associate in June 2016 and steadily rose through the ranks. She was promoted to Senior Associate in 2018 before being elevated to Associate Partner in September 2023, a position she held until May 2026. Prior to joining the firm, she worked as an Associate at Gandhi & Associates in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region.
Announcing her new role, Tripathy shared that she was excited to begin a new chapter with Netflix, taking on the position of Counsel, Music Business Affairs from June 2026.
The appointment comes as streaming platforms continue to deepen their engagement with artists, labels, publishers and rights holders amid the growing complexity of music licensing and content partnerships. For Netflix, Tripathy's expertise adds further strength to its in-house legal team as the company expands its content and music ecosystem in India.
For Tripathy, the move marks a transition from private practice to an in-house leadership role at one of the world's leading entertainment companies, bringing with her years of experience navigating the legal and commercial dynamics of the music business.
