Renowned musician T. M. Krishna has released a new book titled We the People of India – Decoding a Nation’s Symbols, exploring the history and cultural significance of India’s key national emblems, including the flag, anthem, motto Satyamev Jayate, the Ashoka Lions and the Constitution’s Preamble.
Speaking at the launch event held at the Pune International Centre, Krishna explained that his background in music, where symbolism plays a central role, inspired his interest in how symbols shape national identity. He highlighted that symbols such as the flag and national song carry layered meanings that often go unnoticed in everyday life.
On the Indian flag, Krishna offered his own interpretation, suggesting the blue colour and chakra represent the strength and voice of marginalised communities and the spirit of civil dissent. He also defended the choice of Jana Gana Mana as the national anthem and spoke about sensitive aspects of Vande Mataram’s verses in the context of inclusivity.
Political scientist Suhas Palshikar, who joined Krishna at the event, noted that it’s uncommon for an artist to delve so deeply into socio-political and philosophical discourse, making this book a unique contribution that bridges art and national consciousness.
