Nikhita Gandhi To Make IFFM 2026 Debut, Talks A.R. Rahman’s Influence And Regional Music

Indian playback singer Nikhita Gandhi is set to make her debut performance at the Indian Film Festival of Melbourne (IFFM) 2026 on August 13. Ahead of the performance, the singer spoke about her musical journey, working across languages, the influence of A.R. Rahman and her upcoming independent album.

Gandhi, who has worked across Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Bengali and Kannada cinema, said performing in different languages has helped her understand the diverse cultures and musical traditions across India. She also noted a distinction between Bollywood and regional music, observing that musicians often receive greater value and stronger fandom in regional markets.

Reflecting on her career, Gandhi identified ‘Raabta’ as a key milestone that established her in Bollywood, while ‘Jugnu’ marked another significant moment, particularly after the song gained international popularity. She said successful songs often open doors to further collaborations in India and globally.

Gandhi also spoke about A.R. Rahman’s role in her journey, describing him as an integral influence while acknowledging that every composer and artist she has worked with has contributed to her growth.

The singer is currently working on her debut independent album, which is expected to release this year. She said the project is particularly significant as she is predominantly known for her film music, adding that her independent work allows her to focus more closely on the quality and musicality she wants to represent.

At IFFM 2026, Gandhi is expected to perform a mix of some of her popular tracks along with newer songs, bringing her music to audiences in Melbourne.
