Indian Music Rights Bodies Launch Sangeet Dwar, A Single-Window Licensing Portal

In a significant move aimed at streamlining India’s fragmented music licensing ecosystem, leading music rights bodies have jointly introduced Sangeet Dwar, a single-window digital portal designed to simplify public performance licensing across the country.

Soft-launched this week, Sangeet Dwar brings together major rights organisations including IPRS, PPL, Novex, and RMPL, enabling users to secure public performance licences through one unified platform. The portal is intended to cover a wide range of use cases, including weddings, corporate events, festivals, hospitality venues, and other public performances.

Industry stakeholders have long flagged the complexity of India’s music licensing process, which often requires event organisers and venues to approach multiple agencies separately, leading to compliance gaps and widespread under-licensing. Sangeet Dwar aims to address this challenge through standardised workflows, consolidated permissions, and transparent pricing, significantly reducing friction for legitimate music usage.

According to industry estimates, a large proportion of public performances in India currently take place without proper licensing, resulting in substantial revenue losses for composers, lyricists, performers, publishers, and labels. By centralising the licensing process, Sangeet Dwar seeks to formalise this largely under-reported market and unlock new royalty streams for rights holders.

The platform’s launch reflects a broader shift towards formalisation within India’s music economy. As informal structures move into organised systems, industry leaders believe the overall revenue pool will expand, benefiting independent artists and major labels alike. Improved compliance is also expected to bring greater transparency and traceability to royalty collections and distributions.

From a user perspective, Sangeet Dwar is positioned as a practical solution to long-standing legal and operational uncertainty. Event planners, venue owners, and hospitality operators can now obtain the necessary permissions without navigating multiple agencies, while creators and rights holders gain improved visibility into how and where their music is being used.

The rollout of Sangeet Dwar marks a notable step in modernising India’s music licensing infrastructure, with stakeholders watching closely to see whether the single-window model can drive higher compliance and more equitable royalty flows across the ecosystem.
