“I Am Very Much Influenced By His Singing”: Tripura CM Manik Saha Pays Tribute To SD Burman

Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha paid tribute to legendary composer and singer Sachin Dev Burman on his birth anniversary, remembering the music maestro’s enduring contribution to Indian music.

S.D. Burman was born on October 1, 1906, in Comilla, then part of British India and now in Bangladesh. He belonged to the erstwhile royal family of Tripura and went on to establish himself as one of Indian cinema’s most influential composers and singers.

Saha recalled Burman’s distinctive singing style and said he had been deeply influenced by the legendary musician’s voice and musicality.

Burman began his musical journey as a radio artist in Calcutta before moving into film music. His career spanned Bengali and Hindi cinema, with compositions that blended folk traditions with classical and other musical influences.

Over the course of his career, Burman composed music for more than 100 films and worked with some of the most prominent singers of his era, including Lata Mangeshkar, Kishore Kumar, Mohammed Rafi, Asha Bhosle, Geeta Dutt and Manna Dey.

His repertoire also included songs he sang himself, with tracks such as Sun Mere Bandhu Re, Mere Sajan Hai Us Paar and Allah Megh De Chhaya De continuing to be remembered by music audiences.

S.D. Burman passed away in 1975, but his musical legacy continues to influence generations of artists and listeners. His son, R.D. Burman, subsequently emerged as another major force in Hindi film music.

The tribute comes as the music industry continues to revisit S.D. Burman’s contribution to Indian cinema and his distinctive musical vocabulary, which remains part of the country’s enduring film-music heritage.
